Three Seconds Changed the Conversation

It happened on a Friday morning at a CONNECTIONS Gathering.
The table was full—but not crowded. A gentle murmur of conversation filled the room as the Gathering began—soft voices, smiles, and an unspoken sense of ease settling in. It felt as though everyone had arrived carrying something a little deeper than words, drawn together with the goal of connecting beyond just surface conversations.
At one side of the table sat Anna.
She hadn’t planned to say much that morning. In fact, she almost didn’t come. It had been a long week, and the idea of making conversation felt… exhausting.
But something about CONNECTIONS kept pulling her back.
Across from her sat James—a natural talker. Friendly, quick-witted, the kind of person who could connect a story to anything you said within seconds.
The prompt for the Gathering was simple:
“Share a moment when you felt truly seen or heard.”
Anna hesitated.
Then, quietly, she began.
At first, her words came carefully. A story about her father. About a time when she felt overlooked growing up. About how that feeling had followed her into adulthood more than she liked to admit.
James leaned in, listening.
And then it happened.
That familiar spark.
He knew this story. Or at least, he thought he did. His brain jumped ahead—Oh, I’ve got something for this. I’ve been there. I can relate. I can help.
His mouth almost opened.
But then something different happened.
He paused.
Just… for a moment.
One second.
Two seconds.
Three.
And in that space, Anna kept going.
Her voice shifted.
What started as a simple story became something deeper. More personal. More real.
She shared something she hadn’t planned to say. Something she hadn’t said out loud in a long time.
The table grew quieter—not awkwardly, but intentionally. The kind of quiet that feels like respect.
James felt it too.
If he had jumped in—like he usually would have—he would have missed it.
That moment.
That truth.
That connection.
After she finished, there was no rush to respond.
No one jumped in to fix it. Or top it. Or redirect it.
James simply said,
“Thank you for sharing that.”
And he meant it.
Later, as people began to leave, Anna lingered.
She walked over to James and said something simple—but powerful:
“I don’t usually go that deep with people. But… I felt like I could today.”
Here’s the fascinating part:
Nothing extraordinary happened.
There was no brilliant advice.
No perfectly crafted response.
No life-changing speech.
Just… three seconds.
You see, the human brain processes words far faster than we can speak them. While someone is talking, our minds race ahead—finishing sentences, forming replies, connecting dots.
It’s natural.
It’s human.
But in those moments, we face a quiet choice:
Do we jump in?
Or do we make space?
Because when we interrupt—even with good intentions—we can unintentionally say:
“I’ve heard enough.”
“I know where this is going.”
“My turn.”
But when we pause?
We say something entirely different.
“I’m here.”
“Take your time.”
“You matter.”
At CONNECTIONS, this is what we’re really creating.
Not just conversations.
But space.
Space for people to arrive fully.
Space to be heard without being rushed.
Space to share something real—and have it received.
So here’s something to try at your next Gathering—or your next conversation anywhere:
When you feel that spark—that urge to jump in, relate, respond, or add—
Pause.
Just for three seconds.
It might feel longer than it sounds.
But in that small window, something powerful can happen:
Someone may go deeper.
Someone may feel seen.
Someone may leave thinking, “That mattered.”
Because sometimes, the most meaningful connection doesn’t come from what we say…
…but from the space we’re willing to hold.

Okay. I love Three Seconds. As a facilitator, this is a good point to make perhaps at the beginning of the meeting. Sort of lets practice listening today or lets control the feeling of jumping in too soon. Guilty!
